This card can definitely surprise your opponent.  Because you are paying one Life from the Defending Character, if that Character is a Gladiator who was 1-2 away from Raging, this card will make them Raging for the Attack.  This means that they will either deal a Rage Damage back (if Unset) or they will Unset (if Set).

If they survive the Attack, they can then Attack or Set for some other purpose.  This card can help you earn extra Cheer!

In a deck with Demon Gladiators (who typically start with a low Rage value) this can give you an early advantage at a relatively low cost.
